Our Head of Library & Archive Collections for Art & Design, Linda Newington, turned 60 on 28th September! Happy Birthday Linda!
In recognition of her turning ‘the new 30!’ we organised a blanket ‘knit-a-thon’! Recruiting staff, friends, and ex-students, we collaborated and knitted 60 squares for Linda’s blanket. Numerous squares filtered in over the past few weeks by post and by hand to contribute to the birthday gift, with amazing organisation and calm(!) by Catherine Polley, Liasion Librarian.
WSA Alumna, Deryn Relph, kindly took the squares home over the weekend and put them together as a beautiful, unique blanket for us to present on the Monday morning. Deryn studied on the BA Textile Design degree and is now a freelance textile designer, specialising in knitted textiles and interior furnishings.
Now, as many of you know, for Linda’s 50th, her present was quite a surprise! A ‘Calendar Girls’ style calendar by library & WSA staff! For this special birthday, we were under strict instructions for a more modest approach!
Despite her apprehension, Linda came down at ‘coffee break’ and was greeted by a large group of friends and staff in the cafe. One of Linda’s research interests is war-time knitting and in this Centenary of WW1 we felt it appropriate to have Rob Hames (painting technician) present the blanket in full military uniform! A few others donned the odd coat or hat and Linda loves her blanket!
Thank you to all who input their time, love and creativity into the squares and Linda, we hope you enjoy warmth and smiles with the blanket for years to come!
With love from all of us, Happy Birthday. x
